Murmeration
I have completed the first “page” of my birdy book.
It is a “murmeration” (the proper name for a group of them) of starlings flying above another who is looking up at them.

The starling is a cut out of a drawing i did, painted with watercolour and stuck on. The mumeration is a home made “rubber stamp” which after much experimentation with chopping at a wine cork, cutting card etc was made by cutting up a wide rubber band and sticking the little birds to the cardboard sleeve of my new putty rubber (with rubber still inside for stability)!

I really enjoyed the process and trying to work out how to do it. It is so good to be absorbed in a task and I found it surprisingly relaxing and not too draining.
The starling looking up reminds me of the people in the concentration camp being “envious of birds” (see previous post) and looking up at them, and also of myself looking up. The connection between those on the ground and those “in flight”, and perhaps a sense of longing to join in.

Wow!! What word would you put w this?
If you decide to do more rubber stamp carving, let me know and I”ll turn you on to easy-to-carve blocks — if you don’t already know abt them.

Hi nina, no i don’t know about easy-to-carve blocks… i didn’t do any research into what was available in the world, only my house! I will seek them out in future!
What word would i put with the picture? Well i call it “murmeration” but i did write a haiku about starlings as well… maybe i will add it on the next page

This is beautiful!
And very creative of you to have invented your own stamp-making technique!
I was also going to suggest easy-to-carve blocks. There’s a product I’ve seen called Speedy Stamp available at http://www.lawrence.co.uk. Haven’t used it but is meant to be a lot easier to carve than lino. Also some people carve into rubbers/erasers
I love the word murmeration.

It is a great word isn’t it?

I just looked at this picture again, and it reminds me SO much of the work of Milton Avery. If you’re not familiar w this American painter, pls google him so you can see how fantastic your own painting is!
